Oops sorry I forgot about the ancillary files. I would suggest either pointing your PATH to the build directories in your checked out version of the code where you compiled them or copying them somewhere outside of the original tarball you downloaded to avoid confusion. It looks like you know some stuff about using the command line so I'm hoping the stuff about PATH makes sense.
